PUBLISHERUniversity of California Press

This book contains the secretly taped conversations of 10 leading German physicists interned by the British military during the last six months of 1945. The scientists include Hahn, Heisenberg, Harteck, Weizsacker, and Diebner, all of whom had some dealings with the German atomic bomb effort. Recorded at Farm Hall, a wiretapped country house near Cambridge, the conversations elucidate the physicists’ debates about their progress and illustrate an apparent moral ambivalence to their own work. The transcripts also document their reactions to the news of the bombing of Hiroshima. The book contains photographs of the detainees, and a section about what happened to them after they were released.
