In this article, atomic physicist Otto Frisch relates his experiences working on the atomic bomb both in Britain and the United States. Frisch covers the discovery and early research of fission and his work with Rudolf Peierls. He writes of his and Peierls’ attempts to estimate the size of the critical mass needed for fast neutron fission in U-235 and their memorandum informing the British government of their findings. Frisch also describes his part in the Manhattan Project, including the time when some U-235 he was assembling momentarily went critical by accident. The article is introduced by a lengthy quote from Frisch describing his experiences witnessing an atomic explosion.
