TITLENuclear Legacy: Students of Two Atomic Cities
PUBLISHERBattelle Press
CITYColumbus, OH

This book is a joint effort by Ukrainian and American high school students to draw connections between the nuclear experiences of the two cultures. Primarily an educational publication, the book focuses on the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the Manhattan Project of the 1940s. First, Prypyat in the Ukraine and Richland in the state of Washington are presented in their historical context, and then the articles explore the initial stages of nuclear development and their effects on both communities. The student authors move from a discussion of the history of Chernobyl and the Manhattan Project to a discussion of living today in areas heavily influenced by nuclear cultures. The book concludes by speculating about what the respective business and scientific communities will be like in the future. It contains parallel English and Ukrainian texts.
