This autobiographical graphic novel depicts the months preceding the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the day of the attack from the perspective of a Japanese boy and his pacifist family. Prior to the attack, it shows the severe social isolation faced by those who opposed the war, and the inability of the populace to comprehend that the empire could lose the war. The book is the first is a series of three describing events occurring before, during, and after the bombing; they were also made into a feature length film. Widely read in Japan, the series conveys the horror of war, and a strong message that nuclear weapons should never again be used.
