This book reviews the last Allied summit during World War II in which Truman, Churchill, and Stalin created a new balance of power after Germany’s surrender in the summer of 1945. Mee demonstrates how due to national interest, peace was destined to be sacrificed to discord; the meeting at Potsdam had as much to do with the beginning of the Cold War as it did with the end of World War II. The author notes that Stalin lost his battle for huge reparations from Germany but succeeded in his quest to obtain a large slice of Germany for Poland, and Poland for the Soviet Union. Much of the material in the book is drawn from transcripts of the conference and papers of the participants.
