This book provides a history of the cooperative efforts among the United States, its allies, Russia, and the other states of the former Soviet Union to manage the legacy of nuclear weapons production and deployment in the former Soviet Union. The efforts include dismantling nuclear delivery systems, securing nuclear weapons and fissile materials, controlling nuclear expertise, and developing effective controls for exporting nuclear materials. The book provides detailed information for each major nuclear facility or storage location as well as data on specific types of nuclear delivery systems. It also discusses the status of treaties on strategic nuclear weapons treaties between the United States and the Soviet Union and Russia including the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) and earlier agreements, as well as the efforts that resulted in the denuclearization of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. The book was co-published by the Center for Nonproliferation Studies.
