This movie, based on Masuji Ibuse's classic novel Black Rain, depicts the bombing of Hiroshima and the devastation and struggles that the survivors faced. The story centers on a young Japanese woman, Yasuko, and shows how she develops cancer, and her family suffers from radiation sickness, although they were outside the city when the atomic bomb was dropped. The film focuses on the long-term mental and emotional anguish of the survivors, known as hibakusha, as well as the physical destruction of Hiroshima. Many of the scenes in the movie are graphic and horrifying, but they accurately depict the tragic results of the atomic bomb.
