This article contains the English translation of the first part of the historic paper announcing the nuclear fission of uranium with neutrons. First published in 1939 in Die Naturwissenschaften, the article was written by two German chemists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann. It gives chemical and physical evidence for nuclear fission. The experimental results indicated that the new particles did not behave like radium but in fact like barium. That was in conflict with all experiences in nuclear physics, a difficult position for the chemists. It is included in an issue of the Journal of Chemical Education that commemorates fifty years of knowledge of nuclear fission.
