This book is a study of the factors which influenced the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan during World War II. The author begins with a summary of the invention of the atomic bomb and its development. He discusses President Roosevelt’s role prior to his death, when President Truman took office. The author analyzes the United States’ request for unconditional surrender by Japan at the Potsdam Conference, and President Truman’s decision. The book uses primary sources, especially the Manhattan Engineer District files, to document the people and circumstances that influenced the decision.
