RUNNING TIME165 minutes

This docudrama presents the final frenzied months of World War II, and the personal stories of Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and Emperor Hirohito. The decision to use the atomic bomb is shown in detail, from the meetings of the interim committee and Secretary of War Henry Stimson, to Truman’s personal dilemma about the bomb. The film emphasizes the divided Japanese leadership: the military’s desire to fight to the last man in contrast with the politicians who secretly hope for peace. Other topics include the conference at Yalta, the proposed U.S. invasion of the Japanese home islands, and the USS Indianapolis.
