TITLEMining and Selling Radium and Uranium
CITYHeidelberg, Germany

This work focuses on uranium and radium mining and the production of their by-products in the centuries before and the decades after World War II. The narrative integrates material from multiple disciplines to present a comprehensive history of uranium and radium and their applications to medicine and industry. It examines the extraction of radium from uranium ores, a process that gave rise to radiation oncology and created a large market for radium. Also included are descriptions of uranium mines in the Belgian Congo, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the western U.S. A chapter describes the history of the detrimental effects to miners’ health. The sources of uranium in the Manhattan Project are mentioned but are not emphasized.
