This gripping documentary film features Stanislav Petrov, a former lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defense Forces, and his role in preventing an incident in 1983 from becoming World War III. The film reenacts the events leading to Petrov’s decision not to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike when his computers indicated that five U.S. missiles were headed toward the Soviet Union. Integrated throughout the film are real life clips from Petrov’s life and his trip to the U.S. in 2006 to accept an award from the United Nations. The bonding that occurs between the elder Petrov and his young Russian interpreter during the trip adds depth to the film.
