This documentary drama chronicles the events occurring on the Russian submarine B-59 on October 27, 1962, which almost triggered World War III. As the temperature rose and air decreased aboard the submerged sub, its captain panicked and ordered the launch of a nuclear tipped torpedo. Nuclear war was averted by Vasili Arkhipov, the flotilla commander and second-in-command of the sub, who overruled the captain’s orders. Historical film footage and interviews with Arkhipov’s wife and participants from both Russia and the U.S. enhance the presentation of a harrowing brush with nuclear catastrophe during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
