This document – Chapter 2 from Volume 1 of the 2011 Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, Tennessee – provides an overview of the activities at the Complex. A brief history of Y-12 precedes the description of operations at the facility ongoing at the time of the report (2010). Y-12 is the site for enriched uranium processing and storage as well as one of the primary manufacturing facilities for maintaining the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. It also receives, dismantles, and dispositions retired weapons and sub-assemblies from the nuclear stockpile.
