This site provides an introduction to the interviews conducted by historian Martin Sherwin with Manhattan Project veterans and friends of J. Robert Oppenheimer in the 1970s and 1980s. Sherwin recorded them in preparation for the award winning biography of Oppenheimer, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2006), which he co-authored with Kai Bird. The audio recordings and transcripts in the collection span Oppenheimer’s life from his graduate school days until his death. They reflect on many aspects of his personality, career, and relationship with his family. In addition to their focus on Oppenheimer, the interviews provide insights to the relationships among the scientists at Los Alamos, the development of the hydrogen bomb, post-war government investigation of scientists suspected of being communists, and U.S. nuclear policy. More interviews will be added to the site as funds become available.
