This report summarizes the details of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiated between Iran and five Western nations (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China). The JCPOA was designed to ensure that Iran uses its nuclear program for peaceful purposes. In return the United States, European Union, and the United Nations will lift economic sanctions on Iran. The report presents a brief history of Iran’s nuclear program. It also describes the Joint Plan of Action (JPA), which aims to freeze most of Iran’s nuclear program during the period of JCPOA negotiations. The JPA allows for a limited, targeted, and reversible relief of sanctions on Iran. Appendices include a timeline and a summary of JCPOA commitments. The 31-page report provides a useful, unbiased overview of the 2015 agreement with extensive footnotes.
