This Congressional Research Report addresses the security problem of the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) role in weapons proliferation and issues related to U.S. foreign policy since the mid-1990s. The PRC’s nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and their delivery systems pose a threat to U.S. security interests. The report focuses on legislation and sanctions imposed or waivered on the government of the PRC and its entities. It includes information on the PRC’s sale of technology to Iran, Pakistan, and Syria as well as its relations with North Korean weapons programs. The final section presents policy issues and options for dealing with China.
