This article provides a significant update on the status of Israel’s nuclear weapons program (2014) and a summary of the program's history. It reviews the responses of United States administrations to Israel’s policy of “transparency” regarding those weapons. The authors also discuss the nuclear alert during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the apparent “Vela” nuclear test in 1979. They estimate that Israel possesses approximately 80 warheads, fewer by far than most public estimates. The delivery systems for those weapons consist of short range Jericho missiles, aircraft, and sea-launched missiles. The authors conclude that much is unclear about Israel’s nuclear weapons program because the nation’s government has continued to keep this information secret. Readers seeking to peer into Israel’s opaque nuclear policy will find the article useful. The contents are supported by numerous references.
