Drawing from papers presented at the 2013 meeting of the American Nuclear Society, this book examines global security and safety of nuclear weapons and reactors as it presents the case for action toward what the authors view as a necessary goal: the elimination of nuclear weapons. Written by two former U.S. secretaries of state, a senator, and a prominent nuclear physicist, the book begins with an excellent history of nuclear arms control and recommendations for reducing the dangers posed by nuclear energy. Other chapters focus on the safety and security status of weapons and reactors; the negotiations that took place between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev; ways to deal with Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons; and arguments for the elimination of all nuclear weapons and ways to get to that goal. The authors have worked together in the past on matters of nuclear security, and their overarching message is that time is not on our side: policy makers must move forward now.
