This classic black and white film is a black comedy that portrays an accidental nuclear attack. It depicts a crazed U.S. Air Force commander who orders a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union without the consent of the president. After the order is given, the president is helpless to stop the attack. When the president contacts the premier of the Soviet Union, he learns that when a nuclear bomb is dropped on the Soviet Union, another huge bomb, the Doomsday Device, will explode, automatically causing radioactive fallout that will end all life on Earth. Peter Sellers plays three major characters. The film, which is funny as well as frightening, captures societal fears that existed in the early 1960s as the United States and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of nuclear war.
