This report suggests changes to U.S. policy in order to address challenges presented by the Islamic Republic of Iran with respect to its nuclear activities. The authors recommend that the U.S. adjust policy in order to convince Iran that it would be in its best long-term interest to resolve the current (2010) issues regarding its nuclear ambitions. The policy recommendations are also designed to avoid possible future conflict with a defiant, nuclear-armed Iran. In the report, three groups of experts address the following topics: internal politics and Iranian foreign policy, Iran’s regional and global relations, and options for U.S. policy. An appendix contains a separate report on nuclear energy in the Middle East. Extensive footnotes support the text.
