This report assesses U.S. President Barack Obama’s efforts to promote the security of all nuclear weapons and weapons-grade material and supports the view that a global campaign is imperative to improve nuclear security. A useful executive summary presents major points and findings. The author evaluates the risk of nuclear terrorism and the outlook of worldwide nuclear security in 2010. Subsequently, the report presents a series of goals for securing nuclear materials throughout the globe as well as a framework for judging the progress toward those goals. The author then evaluates the efforts of the Obama administration and other nations' governments to address nuclear security issues in 2009. The last section delineates how the international community could move forward to achieve greater nuclear security in four years. The report includes footnotes, as well as quantitative tables, graphs and explanatory diagrams. It is part of a continuing series entitled "Securing the Bomb," commissioned by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI).
