This book documents and analyzes 36 accidents involving U.S. nuclear weapons that occurred between 1950 and 1980, compilied from declassified Aircraft Accident Reports, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Reports, U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) reports, memoranda, and other primary sources. Each of the books chapters describes a specific accident using both the summary of the event issued by the DOD and the authors' comments. Each accident profile also includes additional information and documentation such as a history of the flight, facsimiles of official reports, photographs, maps, and other statements regarding the incident and its aftermath. The final chapter summarizes safety devices as set forth by the DOD, overviews the effects of contamination by particular radioactive elements, and provides diagrams of safety devices used on nuclear weapons. The book includes a bibliography of supporting documents and books.
