This study examines the socioeconomic and political forces that shape the nuclear weapons decisions of selected Middle Eastern nations: Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, and Libya. It analyzes both historical and current (2007) conditions. The book’s first chapter highlights the economic, political, and military forces that drive nuclear decisions in the Middle East; subsequent chapters discuss each nation in more depth and consider the particular elements that influence each country’s nuclear ambitions. The conclusion speculates on the future of Middle Eastern nuclear proliferation and examines the possibility of establishing a nuclear weapons-free zone (NWFZ) in the region. An appendix includes the text of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Additionally, the book is supported by an extensive bibliography.
