This 2009 article provides an excellent review of six new nuclear reactor designs that are being considered as replacements for current types. Included are brief descriptions of the supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR), the very high temperature reactor (VHTR), the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), the gas-cooled fast reactor (GFR), the lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR), and the molten-salt reactor (MSR). Comments are given on the prospects for those Generation IV systems, including how they differ from existing designs in terms of safety and efficiency.
