This website, created by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), contains explanations and details of arms control agreements regulating nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons and missiles. For each agreement listed, the site offers the provisions, status, chronology of events that precipitated the treaty, and related texts – such as primary documents, fact sheets, and briefs. The information is organized into the following categories: bilateral treaties, which are agreements that exist between two nations such as the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT); bilateral risk reduction; the U.S.-Russia Memoranda of Understanding; and multi-lateral treaties, which is further subdivided into nuclear, conventional, export control, and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Founded by Manhattan Project scientists in 1945, FAS upholds its founders’ belief that scientists have a unique responsibility to 1) warn the public and policy leaders of the potential dangers posed by scientific and technical advances; and 2) show how good policy can assist the beneficial application of new scientific knowledge. FAS prides itself on addressing critical policy topics that are not well covered by other organizations.
