This book is a dramatic retelling of the Allied efforts to destroy the Norsk Hydro heavy water plant in Norway during World War II. The Allies believed the plant was crucial to the German atomic bomb project. The author integrates previously classified documents with his own interviews of the people involved to describe each stage of attacks on the plant, from the failed "Freshman" operation, to the American bombing, to the sabotage of the ferry in 1944. The author gives detailed descriptions of each operation and of the men who carried them out. An interesting picture section contains photos of the sprawling plant with and without bomb damage, the Gestapo officers who executed the British commandos, and the Norwegian commandos who sabotaged the plant.
