AUTHORFrank, Pat
TITLEAlas, Babylon
CITYNew York, NY

This novel is about a Florida town that survives a nuclear war. Frank’s portrait is that of ordinary people who escape the destruction, yet must carry on and process the human tragedy. The characters speculate about the future of civilization on the northern hemisphere. Frank does not delve into the death and suffering of the victims directly. Nor does he present the strategic and military aspects of a nuclear war. The book, written in 1959, shares some similarities with Shute’s classic On the Beach, though Frank’s approach is less artistic and focuses more on handling ideas of destruction than on facing imminent radioactive destruction of all human beings.
