This 1945 article compiles official British government public statements issued just after the use of the first atomic bomb on Japan. Its purpose was to explain to the citizens of the UK the nature of the atomic bomb and the role of British scientists in its development. The first two statements are from Winston Churchill and Clement Atlee, who were the former and acting Prime Ministers, respectively, at the time the statements were released. They describe the role of the UK in the development of the bomb. The official agency reports that follow summarize the discoveries in modern physics that led to the bomb, beginning with radioactivity and ending with chain reactions. The article provides a historical perspective on the bomb and is accessible to a wide audience.
