This article presents new (as of 1999) discoveries about activities conducted at the ten formerly secret cities that comprise the Russian nuclear weapons complex. The information is intended to provide an update to a more detailed book on the subject published by the same authors in 1994, entitled Making the Russian Bomb: From Stalin to Yeltsin. The article opens with a brief historical overview of the Soviet nuclear weapons complex, including an analysis of newly available satellite photographs, though the actual images are not included. The authors then discuss each of the secret cities individually, splitting the cities into two groups: one that was involved in nuclear warhead research, development and serial production; and another that worked on highly-enriched uranium (HEU) and plutonium production. Numerous tables and figures enhance the value of the article.
