In this short book, Hans Blix, former Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), makes a personal plea for increasing international action toward nuclear disarmament. Drawing on his experiences and previous arms control efforts, he explains why nuclear nations need to fulfill their commitment to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). He also argues that the nuclear weapons states should not use the threat of nuclear terrorism as justification for continued possession of arsenals. The book concludes with an appeal for the nuclear nations to embrace nuclear disarmament as a means of global security. An appendix contains a set of recommendations from the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC). Blix is the Chairman of the WMDC, an independent commission funded by the Swedish government and tasked with devising short-term and long-term approaches to prevent the further spread of weapons of mass destruction.
