This seminal letter to the editor is the first report of the nuclear fission of the 235 isotope of uranium by neutron bombardment. The 235 and 238 isotopes of uranium were separated by Alfred Nier at the University of Minnesota using a mass spectrometer. Those samples were then sent to the physics department at Columbia where they were bombarded with slow neutrons. The results supported the theory of Niels Bohr and John Wheeler that U-235 is responsible for slow neutron fission.
