This compact book contains a history of nuclear proliferation from the United States’ Manhattan Project to the current (2006) confrontations with Iran and North Korea (DPRK). The author also discusses the effects of past and present U.S. nuclear policies on proliferation and efforts to control nuclear weapons. One chapter is devoted to the reasons that nations do or do not desire nuclear weapons. The successes and failures of the Non-Proliferation Treaty receive close examination. The volume provides the reader with an excellent view of the influence of nuclear weapons on the history of the twentieth century and the challenges of containing nuclear proliferation. The author is the Director for Nuclear Policy at the Center for American Progress and has written widely on nonproliferation issues.
