This is the website of the international nuclear fusion project, ITER. The goals of the project are to demonstrate that nuclear fusion can be used to generate electricity and to obtain the necessary data to design and operate a fusion reactor for that purpose. The international partners, consisting of the European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, China, India, South Korea, Russia, and the United States, agreed to construct a research facility in Cadarache, France, beginning in 2007, and a video stream of the ongoing construction process is on the home page. The website contains a short history of the project, news, and extensive information on fusion at different levels of detail, thereby providing suitable resources for a wide variety of audiences, incuding students, educators, fusion scientists, and engineers. The name ITER at one time stood for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, but that usage has been discontinued, and it now refers to the Latin word iter, meaning 'the way' (glossary page).
