This article examines the potential of nuclear power to avert climate change by avoiding carbon emissions. The authors co-chaired a major 2003 report on the future of nuclear power produced at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which suggested that nuclear power could make a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases. The article describes new reactor technology, economics, waste management, and international efforts to reduce threats of nuclear proliferation. It provides a good overview of the potential and the problems associated with nuclear power. The article is part of an issue, Energy's Future Beyond Carbon, which places nuclear power in perspective with other sources of energy.
