This web page contains a brief history of the Ames Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. The Ames lab was started as a result of the Manhattan Project and was used to develop better and more cost-efficient ways of producing pure uranium for use in reactors. Ames Laboratory successfully improved methods of melting and casting uranium, and it manufactured uranium for use in reactors until the end of World War II. After the war, the lab broadened its scope; it continues to conduct research in the chemical and bio-chemical fields. The web page is part of the Ames Laboratory website.
