TITLEThe Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962: A National Security Archive Documents Reader
CITYNew York, NY

This book is a compilation of 83 declassified facsimile copies of original documents from the build-up of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the crisis itself, and the events following. Included are memoranda of conversations, transcripts of meetings, intelligence estimates, and personal correspondence and communiqu├ęs between the heads of state: John Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and Fidel Castro. A glossary gives short biographies of the principal actors, definitions of applicable military terms, and descriptions of selected organizations. The collection is organized into four sections: the prelude, the Missile Crisis, the events directly following the crisis, and four documents that anticipate and describe the effects of the crisis. Also included are a foreword by then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, introductory chapters for each of the four sections, and an extensive chronology of the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis. While all the documents are declassified, there are several that have been excised, some heavily.
