TITLEAn Atomic Romance: A Novel
PUBLISHERRandom House, Inc.
CITYNew York, NY

This novel follows Reed Futrell, an employee at a uranium enrichment facility in Kentucky, through his relationships with his mother, his friends, and his elusive love interest, Julia. A scion of the cavalier spirit that stretched westward through Kentucky in the nineteenth century, Reed maintains a level of machismo and bravado in the face of plutonium leaks, radioactive contamination, and his mother’s declining health. The author, Bobbie Ann Mason, balances several stories in the novel: Reed’s employment at the power plant, based on the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant; the health problems of Reed’s witty mother, who has only her son; and the complex, often contradictory, relationship between Reed and Julia. The novel was Mason’s return to fiction after a decade’s absence; a former journalist, she has penned prize-winning and influential short stories and novels.
