This book is an edited collection of essays, speeches and congressional testimony written by physicist Sidney Drell, primarily about nuclear weaponry and arms control. Some of the material presents concepts in physics, while other material gives tribute to leading physicists, especially Andrei Sakharov. Drell's essays are mostly concerned with deterrence and arms control, both during and after the Cold War. In three of the pieces, he provides a scientist’s thoughts on Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI, also known as Star Wars). Drell worked in many capacities as a consultant to the government of the United States, and served as deputy director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
