This book is the official pictorial record produced by Joint Task Force One of the two atomic tests conducted at Bikini Atoll in 1946. It includes a short introduction about the history of the atomic bomb including the three previous detonations: the Trinity test, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The photographs taken at Bikini Atoll are varied in their themes. Many depict the daily activities of men of the armed forces, from receiving vaccinations to playing ping-pong. Others show the island from varied perspectives and provide a record of the natives and their exodus to another island before the tests. In addition, there are photographs of the two atomic blasts, Tests Able and Baker, the first atmospheric and the second underwater, and the damage done to ships, aircraft, and animals. The photographs are black-and-white, and each contains an extensive caption explaining the event and identifying the important people, places, and scenes.
