This website, a companion site for a Smithsonian National Museum of American History exhibit, describes chronologically the events that occurred during and after the meltdown at the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island in 1979. The site narrates the events that happened at Three Mile Island on the day of the meltdown and explains the initial misunderstandings of what had taken place. It then discusses the examinations of the reactor with a camera and later with sonar equipment that indicated that the extent of the damage within the reactor had been far greater than initially expected. Particular emphasis is given to the preparations for the sonar tests and the conclusions, maps, and models produced from the information gathered. The site also includes a timeline, photographs, topographical maps, and diagrams of the reactor and its damaged interior.
