TITLEThe Enola Gay Controversy

This website, designed as an aid for a university course, provides a detailed chronology of the controversy over the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s 1994 Enola Gay exhibit proposal. The site begins by introducing some of the viewpoints and opinions from the early 1980s through the early 1990s of the main players in the controversy and continues with thorough descriptions of relevant articles and key events throughout the controversy and its aftermath, focusing primarily on the period from April 1994 through December 1995. Foremost among the topics discussed are the arguments and actions of the various groups and people involved in the dispute, such as leading Smithsonian officials, the Air Force Association, the Foreign Legion, Col. Paul Tibbets, Congress, and historians. The site also contains a detailed resource page on both the Smithsonian controversy and the consequences of the atomic bomb. Political cartoons, website links with comments, and a movies and documentaries list are included. The website is part of the History on Trial section of the Lehigh University Digital Library.
