This website contains 54 official documents written from 1951 to 1974 that deal with consultative agreements between the United States and its allies, primarily Great Britain, over the use of U.S. nuclear weapons. The documents span the presidencies of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon and include their negotiations with Prime Ministers Clement Atlee, Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Harold MacMillan, and Harold Wilson. Also covered are the agreements reached between the United States and Canada and the narrower arrangements made with the West German government starting in the late 1960s pertaining solely to U.S. nuclear weapons stationed on German soil. The documents consist of memoranda, cables, letters, and reports written primarily by U.S. government officials, including Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson. Other documents included on the site were written by British, Canadian, and West German officials. The documents are accompanied by an overview of the related negotiations and agreements and background explanations for each document. The collection of documents is Briefing Book No.159 of the National Security Archive, "an independent, non-governmental research institute and library located at George Washington University in Washington, D.C."
