This movie presents a fictional tale of a teenager hacking into the Department of Defense (DOD) computer system. Assuming that it is only a game, the teen proceeds to play “Global Thermonuclear War,” initiating a computer-generated Soviet attack to which the United States military responds by escalating defense mechanisms. By the time the military officials realize the Soviet attack is not real, the computer has already begun a countdown to U.S. retaliation that cannot be stopped. Only through endless simulations of tic-tac-toe can the teen “teach” the computer that there is no winner in global thermonuclear war, no matter what factors are taken into account.
