This book is a collection of essays about nuclear policy by Thomas Murray, one of the original members of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). A New York industrialist and engineer by trade, he draws upon his experience as a member of the AEC from 1950 until 1957 as he addresses many different nuclear issues. Those include the morality of nuclear energy and weapons, rational nuclear armament that does not rely on massive retaliation, disarmament, using atomic energy for power, private versus public power, and the need for the public to actively participate in debates over nuclear policy. In the essays, events of the time are woven together with autobiographical detail and the author's views on nuclear policy.
