This article provides a brief overview of the development of nuclear weapons by the Soviet Union. Written during the Cold War, the introduction highlights Soviet spies operating within the United States and tempers several of the party-line statements in the two following Soviet pieces it introduces: “The Heroic Deed” by A. P. Alexandrov and “Father of the Soviet Bomb” by Igor Golovin. The author, Eugene Rabinowitch, was the editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the time of publication.
