This article evaluates the geological and technical feasibility of a nuclear waste repository in Yucca Mountain in Nevada, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) preferred site. The authors note potential problems with water saturation, oxidation of uranium, volcanic activity and climate change, as well as unproven durability of waste packaging. They caution that even though political pressures are mounting from states and utilities with spent nuclear fuel, to proceed with nuclear waste disposal is unwise considering that there are still unresolved scientific issues.
