This website complements the PBS film, Victory in the Pacific, which describes the final year of World War II in the Pacific from the invasion of Saipan to the use of the atomic bombs and the Japanese surrender. In DVD format, the film chronicles the fierce, suicidal Japanese defenses of the Mariana Islands and Okinawa, and the firebombings of Tokyo and other Japanese cities, as well as the strategies of leaders of both sides that led to tremendous loss of life and destruction. It closes with an examination of the decisions made by those leaders that finally ended the war. The website contains a description of the film; a transcript; links to primary sources, websites, and articles related to the film; a bibliography; short biographies; a 1944-1945 timeline; maps; and a teacher's guide. The website would be useful to people studying that eventful period of history.
