TITLEGoing Critical: The First North Korean Nuclear Crisis
PUBLISHERBrookings Institution Press
CITYWashington, D.C.

The authors of this book present an insiders' account of the first North Korean (DPRK) crisis that led to the Agreed Framework between North Korea and the United States in 1994. The events and debates surrounding the period in history offer insight into the renewed nuclear crisis in North Korea in the early twenty-first century. After providing some historical background for the first crisis, which began with the detection of a nuclear reactor in North Korea in 1980, the authors focus on the period from March 1993 to October 1994 during which the United States and North Korea came to the brink of war before signing the Agreed Framework. The book also covers events that occurred after the signing through December 1995. Appendixes contain the texts of all joint statements and agreements between South and North Korea and a chronology of events from 1980 through 1995.
