This seminal theoretical paper by Niels Bohr, which preceded the discovery of fission in 1939, attempts to explain the experimental results of neutron bombardment of atomic nuclei obtained by James Chadwick, the Joliot-Curies and Enrico Fermi. The explanations cover ejection of alpha and beta particles, gamma radiation, and associated nuclear transmutations. Bohr attempts to classify nuclear reactions into well defined stages that have no simple analogy in the classical-mechanical behavior of atoms. The paper represents the thinking of an eminent physicist prior to the discovery of fission.
